News; Timberland Pro Quadro – Shoe review
regular readers of this column may have noticed that shoes, especially discount timberland boots big black boots and just about anything made by fluevog gets a lot of coverage here. the main reason: it’s easier to write about that which you know and love than that which is unknown and perhaps intolerable. up until recently, yours truly, the sf menswear examiner, knew little about timberland and less about timberland pro.
the “pro” division of timberland picks up where the, um, amateur (?) division leaves off. those of you familiar with good, old-fashioned timberland may be fairly well versed in the company’s line of boots, shoes and off-road trainers. these are generally stylish, somewhat light-duty shoes aimed at the men and women of the great outdoors – weekend warriors – urban mountaineers. these shoes, however, weren’t necessarily meant to be “work shoes.” they lack the safety toe, non-marking, non-skid sole and rugged shank expected in most work shoes. this doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with them it just means that in the world of footwear things often are, and need to be purpose built.
that said, the recently released timberland pro quadro oxford titan xl safety toe is a totally purpose built shoe. this shoe is loaded with the sort of features expected of men timberland boots a serious work shoe.
oiled leather upper – for durability
soft padded collar – for comfort
asymmetrical alloy titan xl safety toe – for safety (duh) and natural forefoot flex
nylon diffusion shank – for torsional rigidity
oil and abrasion resistant sole – to ensure long-lasting sure-footednes
on top of all these features there is one thing that makes these shoes outstanding in their market segment. in addition to being surprisingly lightweight, no doubt due to their cement construction, from day one these shoes were super comfortable, and now, after timberland boots three weeks of nearly continuous use, they are even more so. this is almost unheard of in a shoe that is meant to last under daily use and demanding conditions.
it has to be said that only time will tell how well the cement construction of these shoes will hold up. however, if they are even half as good as their first impression, it’ll probably be years before a serious flaw is found in them .
